Trust me on the Sunscreen
I saw something the other day from an athlete I like that was really worrying. The problem with the internet is people’s viewpoints can run contrary to Science and the real life. This one piece was saying that he didn’t wear sunglasses because by some bizarre miracle his eyes managed to adapt and tell his skin not to burn so he didn’t need to wear sun protection. As someone who spends a lot of time outside either with the dogs or running I will not be following this advice because it’s just wrong. As runner’s or just anyone who spends a significant amount of time outside the suns effects we should not under estimate
Skin cancer is a real issue you do not need to get sunburnt to get skin cancer. Just Long term exposure to the sun can cause this and damage the skin cells in a way that is not visually seen. Just because you don’t burn does not mean you wont get skin cancer. A little Sun exposure can be good for you especially for the Vitamin D but for someone who spends a lot of time outside Sunscreen is a must. Cancer Research UK is not a charity I support (due to their Promotion and support of animal experimentation) however this is a good article on how to protect yourself. Also another article on Skin Cancer
The Sun (well UV rays) can also damage your eyes. It can burn both your cornea and lens. So if you’re in bright sunshine for any long period of time Sunglasses with UV protection are advised. Make sure they have UV protection on them if they don’t you could in fact cause more damage due to your pupil letting in more light. I run in glasses because otherwise the world is a blurry mess to me so my glasses have transition lenses with UV protection. Well worth the extra few pounds and also means I don’t need a separate pair of prescription glasses.
Some more good information on how to protect yourself HERE. Also remember it doesn’t need to be bright sunshine to get affected by the sun and the effects could be years or decades down the line. There is some great Vegan Sun creams out the the one on the Picture I got from The Vegan Store. Please ‘Trust me on the Sunscreen’
