The Injury Conundrum
The good thing about posts like this is it enables me to use words like Conundrum. Just say it to yourself Conundrum, Conundrum, see what a lovely sounding word. Those who are regular perusers of my stuff either here or on other social media will know I’ve had a few issues recently. First a mysterious virus that set me back so whenever I’ve tried to push my running it’s then set me back again. On top of that I have had a Gout Flare up. Oh How I wish I lived the rich life that condition signifies. In reality though sometimes its just one of those things you get due to bad luck. Anyway because of that flare up I have had serious issues with my Big toe and it’s been a real bugger to shift. Finally alternating between a various cocktail of drugs (under Dr’s Supervision) and a liberal amount of Cranberry Juice it seems to have finally settled. I no longer feel like have a red hot poker permanently embedded in my foot. So now how to get back into my running stride? I don’t want to over push myself to either re-injure or get a reoccurrence of any ailment. The problem is I am one for over pushing things so I need to go all Horse like and keep myself reined in.
So my train of thought started like this with me considering going straight back into what I was doing before all this happened. Running 100k a week with some nice 20-25k long runs in. I then suddenly had a rare surge of common sense maybe this was not a good idea. A few weeks of mediocre injury/illness running and going straight back into that I was likely to suffer. At best I would fail at worst I would injure myself. As well as all my Data being on Strava I also have it automatically go to Endomondo. Due to my Subscription to Mens Running UK I was able to get Free Premium which includes access to personalised Training plans. So I decided that following one of these could safely bring me up to Running speed.
My Joy of running is I like to run long. Anything below around 15k I have trouble getting into so my initial thought was let’s do a Half Marathon Training Plan. Luckily the Official Traildog gave me that look the one that says, are you sure? In reality as much as I could run for 2 hours plus now I’m not sure leaping straight back into that would be a good move. So I decided on a 10k plan, a short distance for me but a 10k plan over 8 weeks should build me back up gradually and hopefully include getting a bit more pace on. The official Traildog is also excited as she gets to do the plan with me. I may of course throw a few extra runs in on certain days. I think though for once I am being sensible. Also I have a few other things I need to do over summer so this makes sure I have time for them. So it’s not the sort of distances I wanted to be running MAY/June this year but as always my main reason for running is I enjoy it. So this will hopefully ensure I still enjoy what I’m doing but sensibly hold me back. I’ll see how I am at the end of the 8 weeks but I’m hoping by the back of summer I’ll be doing the sort of distances I love and you never know concentrating on improving my 10k speed may make me a better endurance runner.
I am not one for races for many reasons. The obvious one there are not many near here and my personal responsibilities mean I can’t travel. Also just that Racing isn’t the reason for running for me. I do however occasionally enter the odd one. This year our small little Island is Running its first ever Marathon in July I had planned to do that but now considering my issues I wont be doing it. I could run the distance as long as I had no more issues before then, but I know I would be nowhere near my Time goal and there is a chance that pushing for that so soon after this could just make the rest of my Summer running just a Grind. I run to enjoy my environment and to challenge myself personally. I don’t want one event and preparing for it and that I know I wont be up to performing well in to ruin that for this summer. I still have a couple of other Personal challenges planned for the summer and Maybe an event at the back of August but I’m just going to enjoy my running and along with the official Traildog build my Running back up.
I am very interested to see the effect following a set training plan for this distance will have. I’ll report back with my opinion on the Endomodo training plan. You can always follow my Progress if your on Strava on Endomono . My Strava Profile is publicly viewable (link at the Top) My endomondo account is only Partially viewable because they do not have the same Facility as Strava to block out the immediate area around my house. However if you are on Endo feel free to friend me. My Profile is HERE.
