What do Vegan Zombies eat?
So there I was relaxing with Mrs ROE watching the finale of ‘The Walking Dead’ (now that was disappointing) when an advert for Weetabix Protein appeared. I think the exclamation that came out of my mouth was ‘FFS’! This Protein obsession sometimes brings me to despair. As with all Vegans I may have been asked once or Twice ‘Where do you get your Protein? My answer is always food I think people are shocked that broccoli has protein. The way this seems to be the only thing anyone is worried about is perplexing. It’s as if Protein is some magic food up there with fairy dust.
Now I agree Protein is an important part of the diet but why concentrate on this above all other things. The majority of people on what is seen as the ‘Standard Diet’ get well in excess of Protein if fact sometimes up to twice as much as is needed. This can be shown in the National Diet and Nutrition Survey. So why as soon as someone decides that they are going to ‘get healthy’ do they decide they are Protein Deficient? The diet industry has a lot to answer for with prevalence of High Protein miracle diets and fitness foods. So the food industry has linked onto this.
Now going back to the ‘Weetabix Protein’. The recommended daily amount of Protein is 0.8g per Kilogram of body weight. So a 12 stone Man (76kg/168pounds) needs only 60grams of protein a day, which is a lot less than most people think. Even a runner like me only needs around 1g per Kilo so only 70grams. Now most people will easily hit these goals with little effort. As I mentioned above most people exceed them a portion or ‘Weetabix Protein; which is 40grams 2 biscuits contains 7.6 grams of protein whereas Normal Weetabix contains 4.8 grams per 40grams. So is the extra 2.8 grams of protein needed considering the average person easily exceeds their Protein requirements? Or is this just Marketing?
This morning an article appeared on my FB feed from Runner’s World called ‘Powerful Plant Protein’. It yet again implied it’s hard to gain Protein on a Vegan diet (it’s not) and was recommending 101grams of Protein for a 130 pound runner when they would need around 60 grams at most. We need to get out of this mindset of either lauding one Macronutrient or demonising another. Your diet is not one element it is made of many things. Instead of obsessing over one thing we should be looking at it as a whole thing not an element.
There are many reasons why this protein obsession continues from Marketing to the obsession I see of Macro counting. However you eat just don’t over complicate it. In reality we all know have known for years what we should be eating. Oh and the answer to the Question ‘What do Vegan Zombies Eat?’ …..GRAINS!!!!!!!..
