40 is the new 40
One of the many things that bug me in the media is the idea of aging yes we all get older. I’m a man in his 40s. There’s an article in this months Runner’s World about running and aging. I think the thing that really annoys me is it keeps going on about these ‘Rules’ and then gives what you should do when your over 20, 30 and 40. The implication is that you hit these numbers and suddenly everything changes. Your 39 and 364 days old and you exercise one way then suddenly a day later your 40 and you have to totally change what you do? Now that’s silly. We age gradually and in fact we all age biologically at slightly different rates down to many factors from genetics to lifestyle. Now Runner’s World isn’t the only publication to fall fowl to setting down rules you can see it in many lifestyle/health magazines.
I think it’s the idea that because we hit 40 we are going to degrade. Aging is a fact it happens however it does not mean we’re done for. It doesn’t necessarily mean your best times your greatest distance’s or greatest achievements are done for. In fact in endurance sports specifically older athletes can get better. These rules that people publish are not rules they’re advice and opinion so read them as that. Take this advice and opinion for what it is. Some of it may apply and be useful but you may want throw some of it away. My running changes as time goes on I adapt what I do depending on my goals and current fitness. Age and time are man-made concepts to basically stop us tripping over ourselves. Numbers are subjective so my running/training isn’t ruled by that number it is ruled by what my body is and maybe capable of. Now I just wish people would stop publishing these ‘Rules’
