I’ve Seen Blue Skies through the Tears!
Newsflash running involves pain, in fact most activities involve some discomfort. The thing is to get the gains we want we need to go through that discomfort. This can be hard on occasion but sometimes the way to do this is to focus on the blue skies. When I used to Cycle I used to frequently compete in 10 mile time trials. In Cycling terms the time trial is known as ‘The race of Truth’. It’s just you against the clock and there is nowhere to hide because the clock doesn’t lie. I remember the pain the lactic acid burn and the focus the focus on the finish and that personal best because that was the blue sky and the euphoria. Even if you didn’t hit a personal best time just the finish line and working through all that pain was a joy.
At present I’m working on some speed. I want to get faster over longer distances. I have some goals and events next year and increasing my speed over distance is one of them. So as well as continuing with my Autumn/Winter base mileage I’m throwing in a weekly speed session along with my Hill repeats. So still giving time to enjoy my runs but seeing how much speed a 47 year old who’s only been running 2 1/2 years can gain. As much as I’ve done occasional speedwork over the past years. I’ve not been consistent so any overall pace increase has just been due to my increase in fitness not the occasional bit of speed work. So consistency is the key and that is what I am to do over the next few months. I want to consistently feel that lactic acid burn so I can concentrate on the blue skies I will be competing against the clock for my own ‘Race of Truth’. Now listen to the song!
