‘Empty Miles’ I’ve read this phrase a few times by runners for example ‘I used to run a lot of empty miles but now run smarter’ that was one phrase I saw. I understand what they are getting at and if you have a specific race goal etc you may tailor your runs to that goal. To me though there is no such thing as an empty mile. I’m running for fitness and for fun. Not every run is about my fastest time. Sometimes I run just because I can and those times in no way are they empty. I get the obvious cardiovascular workout but I also learn more about my running and my body. I also get some good quiet thinking time (I think a lot when running). Then there is just the pleasantness of running outside no matter the weather.
What I’m trying to say that not all your exercise has to have a purpose you don’t always have to obsess about your time or the amount of calories you burn. Sometimes it’s just good to have fun as if you have fun doing something you are likely to want to do it long term. In that way none of your miles will be empty as they will always add something to the quality of your life even if they don’t knock seconds off your PB or put you nearer to your training goals.
