Don’t Get too Comfortable!
I was in the pool the other day and I hit the one hour mark. I checked my watch and realised I was on course for my normal amount of lengths. I’ve been swimming two hour sessions and I suddenly realised how comfortable I was I could more than likely go past the two hour mark without much problem. To me that in itself is a problem it means I wasn’t challenging myself. Swimming is much more than burning some calories to me. I want to get better and by being too comfortable means I am not getting better I’m just staying the same.
Your body needs to be stressed otherwise how can your fitness improve. Muscle is built by stress and repair so by me continually doing the same thing all I’m doing is burning calories. Yes my fitness will improve but not as much as if I push myself. So I’ve decided to change it up a bit this week my swimming will be shorter hour sessions where I’ll concentrate more on speed and different strokes. My front crawl (freestyle) is pretty dodgy so I need to improve and the shorter sessions will hopefully help me work on that by mixing sets of breaststroke along with sets of crawl. I’m also planning to do a bit more running this week now that my knee (that I injured a while back) is a lot better.
I have a few other things on the cards over the next few weeks such as for the first time doing a gym class. Our local one is starting to run Metafit and after some prodding from my wife I think I’ll give that a go.
All in all you need to remember don’t get to comfortable. So what are you going to do this week to take yourself out of that comfort zone?
